Bypass surgery

What is Bypass surgery

You must have heard of ‘Bypass Surgery,’ but do you know why people are required to do it?

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), commonly known as Bypass Surgery, is a surgery that improves blood flow to the heart. Cardiac surgeons use this to treat people who have severe Coronary Heart Disease (CHD).

Now, what happens to a person with CHD?

  1. The arteries supplying oxygen-rich blood to the heart gets clogged with cholesterol and other deposits.
  2. These deposits later lead to the formation of a waxy substance called plaque.
  3. Over time, these plaques can harden or rupture.
  4. This hardened plaque narrows the coronary arteries and reduces the blood flow to the heart.
  5. When the heart muscle doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood, it causes – chest pain (called ‘angina’) or even heart attack

A bypass surgery is done to treat such severe narrowing of the coronary arteries.
