This is a commonly done surgery for blocks which occur in the coronary arteries which supply blood to the muscle in the heart.
By this surgery the block is bypassed and blood flow to the heart muscle is established and the muscle functions better.
We can perform this operation by opening the chest in the centre and through the side of the chest also.
There are two techniques for performing CABG:

  • On Pump using Heart lung machine or Cardiopulmonary Bypass
  • Beating heart surgery without stopping the heart.
  • The conduits which can be used are:
    • Arterial conduits – Right and left internal mammary arteries
      • Radial arteries
      • Gastroepiploic arteries
    • Venous Conduits – Long saphenous vein from the leg

Duration of Surgery – 6-8 hours under general anaesthesia.

It will take 3-4 hours for the patient to regain consciousness and the tube which will be there in the mouth will be slowly removed after 12 hours.

Patient will be ambulant after 72 hours when the lines and drains are removed.

It takes 7 days to get discharged from the hospital.

Very safe surgery with less that 0.5% mortality rates.
