Let’s discuss understanding cholesterol
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that occurs naturally in all parts of the body. The human body needs cholesterol to make hormones and vitamin D. Foods from animal sources, such as egg yolks, meat, and cheese are some good sources of cholesterol.
Cholesterols are of three types:
Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL): LDL is also called ‘bad’ cholesterol because it can cause plaque buildup on the walls of the arteries. LDL increases the risks of cardiovascular diseases.
High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL): HDL is also called ‘good’ cholesterol because it helps to unclog the arteries and get rid of LDL. It carries cholesterol from other parts of the body back to the liver. The liver then removes the cholesterol from the body. Maintaining a higher level of HDL is good for the heart’s health. Higher the HDL level, lower the risk of heart attacks.
Triglycerides: Triglycerides are a type of fat found in the blood. Excess calories, alcohol, or sugar in the body are converted into triglycerides and stored in fat cells. High triglyceride levels are common in people who suffer from diabetes, obesity and people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.
Cholesterol levels: The cholesterol level is a measurement of cholesterol units in the blood. These are the acceptable measurements for adults:
- HDL Cholesterol: 50 mg/dL or higher
- LDL Cholesterol: Less than 130 mg/dL
- Triglycerides: Less than 200 mg/dL
